It isn’t just dust. Eighty percent of household dust is actually dead skin cells from us and our pets, and the feces from dust mites that eat that skin dander. Most of us are not greatly affected by this “dust”, some of us suffer from sneezing, runny nose, and headaches from just a minute amount of this stuff floating in the air. What has this to do with vacuum cleaners? Plenty, it turns out.

Filtration is the most important consideration here. HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters on the exhaust of any vacuum will help trap the microscopic particles that carry everything that sets off your allergies. You need to make sure that the filter is sealed. Sealed means that the air is forced through the filter, and cannot go around the filter. HEPA filters that are not sealed are as bad as not having one at all, because all the air will go around the filter, as it is the easiest path. All HEPA filters are made out of the same material. They come in different sizes and shapes, but they do the same job, as long as they are really sealed filters.

Almost no HEPA filters are washable. Some manufacturers say they are, but it is like trying to wash a paper plate. They crumble and disintegrate. Most HEPA filters can be cleaned, at least partially, by using an air compressor to plow out the filter. Just make sure the dirty side of the filter is pointed away from you. Otherwise you will actually force the dirt further into the filter.

Most HEPA filters need to be changed once a year. This can vary widely depending on how often you vacuum, if you have pets that shed, and how much carpet you have. Carpet traps and stores dirt, and also stores the dander and microscopic mites that feed on that dander.

What is the vacuum cleaner casing made from? There are different grades of plastic. The cheaper vacuum cleaners are made from ABS which will warp if it gets hot enough. This warping will allow dust to bypass the filters and spew out into the air we breath. This is one of the main reasons vacuums lose their power after several years. The motor is still in good shape, but the air is leaking out into the room, bypassing the filters. The air is also being sucked in from places on the vacuum bedsides the nozzle on the floor. This warping is also why you will find dust collecting on the outside of you vacuum cleaner after a few years.

Amazingly, the motor material helps with the allergies. A metal motor in the vacuum cleaner will dissipate the heat from inside the motor. A cooler motor will not heat up the plastic enough to warp it. Your filtration will be kept sealed and functioning.

A charcoal filter in your vacuum will also help with the filtration as well as keep pet odors to a minimum.

Cleaning your carpet regularly, perhaps once a year, will freshen the carpet. We suggest using hot water extraction carpet cleaners. They do a more thorough job than the dry foam method, although they can make a mess if you don’t use the cleaner properly.

Bagless vacuum also can cause an airborne allergen attack when you dump out the container. We suggest using HEPA filter liners, or Micron Filtration liners to hold the dirt. They make less of a dirty mess when you dispose of them.

Originally all vacuum cleaners were bagless. All vacuum cleaners simply used a cloth bag to contain the dust and dirt. They leaked dust and odors, but they were much better than having nothing at all. Then paper bags were introduced to dramatically cut down on the dust. The paper bags were a big improvement because they cut down n the odors stored in the cloth outer bag, and the filth and dirt could be thrown away without a dust cloud forming above the vacuum cleaner.

About 1985 the bagless vacuum cleaner became popular. Originally, bagless vacuum cleaners had a distinct advantage over bagged vacuum cleaners. The HEPA filter that all bagless vacuum cleaners have stops almost all the dust and odors from leaking out the vacuum cleaner exhaust. The good news was that the HEPA filters stopped dust from spewing out. The bad news is that the clogged up rapidly. They clogged faster if the air had high humidity or if you were picking up pet hair. The pet dander sticks to the filter and restricts air flow. The slowing air flow is also what cooled the motor. The motors in bagless vacuums tend not to last as long as bagged vacuum cleaners because of this restricted airflow to the motor in bagless vacuum cleaners.

The HEPA filter at the exhaust takes much longer to get dirty because the dirt is trapped in the high filtration paper liner.

Less expensive vacuum cleaners are almost all bagless. The profit is in the filters, not the disposable vacuums. The higher end vacuum cleaners almost all use high filtration inner bags.

If you have pets, the pet dander is what sticks to the bagless HEPA filters. We also recommend to pet owners that they use a vacuum cleaner with a charcoal filter to trap and neutralize the pet odors. Also, natural fiber brushes on your vacuum cleaner’s roller brush will not trap the pet hair in the roller.

I just replaced my £ 9 Hoover “lightweight vacuum cleaner, lighter, I like platinum new light. My mother wanted my Hoover 9 pounds, so I had to buy a vacuum cleaner light. This is 12 pounds and is a great void, even if only You can turn the brush roll off (I would not stand light Hoover), and if there was a “true height adjustment automatic” This will not be high enough in my contemporary fashion shag carpet and rugs from bathroom ( again, I could read my other Hoover). New light weight platinum three pounds more than my previous Hoover easily, and is no longer for me than my previous. For me it was a waste of money. If you have carpets high pile towels or a vacuum is fantastic. I also found the basket out of VAC should be of high quality and very useful. I would want platinum working for me. I’ve had for a week, but I think I will return to the reasons mentioned above .

A DEFINITE WINNER!!!

This upright vacuum has great power. It’s very lightweight and powerful. The brushes are very strong. It feels like it’s self propelled although that is not the case. Some people complained that it was tough to move back and forth. The forward motion is easy, however when you pull back, it’s a little tough. This is because the brushes are so firm and sweeping in a forward motion while you pull back on the cleaner. One word of caution…be sure the bag is attached correctly. My red light came on indicating that the bag was full or there was a clog. This was with the new bag and about 2 minutes of vacuuming. I found that the bag was not seated correctly. There is a cardboard door on the bag that should lift open when the bag is installed correctly. Well, mine was not and therefore the debris was just smacking up against the closed bag. DOH!!! After that incident everything was fine. 
The canister that is included works great too. I’ve read reviews from other people saying that it was garbage. I don’t know, it sure has a strong suction. I think if you read the directions and use genuine Hoover bags and install them correctly, not let them overfill, then you’re going to have a great experience with this Hoover Platinum series package. Best I’ve used

This may be the best vacuum cleaner I’ve owned in 10 years. I have a dog and 3 cats and everyone tracks in sand daily. The Hoover cleans rugs, carpeting and bare floors and tile beautifully without eating rugs. I tried the Bissell pet vacuum and not only does it weigh a ton, it ate all the rugs. 

This Hoover is also beautifully designed–I don’t just mean that it looks good–it does; but it also has handles in the right places, is light weight, and doesn’t have 10 attachments by design. (The portable that comes with it has all the tools and stair capability, etc. that you need.) 

I can vacuum without needing allergy medicine. When you use it, there is no dust or dirt on the base–this one sucks it up instead of spraying dust, pollen and cat hairs all over the place. I will never have a vacuum without bags again. Several people mentioned that the portable canister is noisy–it has a very annoying sound that sends the cats running for cover! As someone else mentioned, adjust the strap for you and use it. This little canister is very handy, has plenty of suction for cleaning carpeted stairs and vacuuming moldings and book cases. Very nice combination.

Best Vaccuum Ever!

I’ve gone through some vacuums, sadly 3 in only 3 years. Yes thats right. The apartment we live in has new carpents, every time I vacuumed it would clog up. The first two Vaccums we had were bagless. Bad bad idea! Every time i’d go to clean them out dust would go everywhere! Ugh! Also the first two were not hoover products and I was getting frustrated with having to unclog them all the time. I remember my mom owning a hoover that lasted for years, I believe she still uses it to this day. So I did my research this time and found this vacuum, and let me tell you for the price you spend its worth it! Hoover is my third and finally vacuum i will have for a long long time. I’ve had it over a year now with no problems what so ever, and I love the mini vac you can carry around. Its great for getting ceiling fans, curtains, and other small stuff on the floor. My husband hasn’t yet used it for the car, but said that it would be perfect to use.

Great price for this good vacuum

We have had a different Hoover upright vacuum for over 20 years now, and it gave us GREAT service (we had to get rid of it because we vacuumed up some areas that had mildew and now it stinks, even after changing the bag). 
This new TEMPO Widepath U5140-900 vacuum does a great job too. The big difference we noted is that the cord does not wind up very well like the older one did….. it is very awkward to wind up. 
Another thing is that this new vacuum does not have a spot to pick it up if you are bringing it up/down the stairs….the older model had a little indentation to pick it up, which was very convenient. 
The price was right, and we always love the FREE shipping.

Great for the Price!

The Tempo does a great job on my carpets and floors…I have no complaints on that aspect. Easy to adjust the height feature, the cord pretty much stays out of the way if you run it up and tuck it under the hose that is secured at the top near the handle. It has a nice long cord and the light is a great feature. I don’t find it does real well along the edges, but for price you can’t have everything! After using the vacuum only once, the belt broke, which I found really strange. Anyway in order to change the belt, you have to UNSCREW the bottom plate to get to the belt. I don’t know why they don’t just use the clips they previously had that swing out so you can easily remove this plate. For a temporary solution to the Hoover belt, I used a Rug Doctor D70 (the only one they had at a nearby Kroger for a Hoover upright). It worked fine, but I did order the Hoover belts from Go [...] (great place for your bags and belts! Good prices and FREE fast shipping)! I like the allergen bags very much! All in all, it’s a good vacuum for the price! I purchase everything I can from Amazon, they are just wonderful about helping any way they can to correct any issues you have! 

*Update! This vacuum has been wonderful….I bought a Royal Palace wool rug (room size) and although they do shed when they are new, this vacuum took care of that with ease! The longer I have this vacuum, the more I appreciate it! It has great suction and I never have to bend over to pick up something it missed!!

Durable and dependable vacuum for the money

I have yet to find the perfect vacuum cleaner, but this Hoover model gets 4-stars from me for dependability, durability and price. 

This vacuum has better suction with a full bag than many other vacuums I have owned had with an empty bag. The on board tools and ready to use hose make for easy cleaning along base boards and other hard to reach places. 

There are things that could be improved (for me, these are minor and not enough to stop me from recommending this vacuum to you without reservation): 1. Weight. This vacuum is rather heavy for toting up and down stairs. 2. Area rugs. It would be nice if there was some way to vacuum large or small area rugs with this vacuum without it eating them. 3. Cord placement. The power cord comes out near the bottom of the unit in the back, and I do find myself stepping on it too often and tripping myself up. 

The things that really make this the best vacuum I’ve owned in a long time (I’ve owned it now for over 2 years without any problems) are: 1. The allergen filter and bagged system. I have dreadful allergies, and I tried a bagless vacuum before and I will never try that again. I do not end up sneezing and feeling miserable after using this unit. 2. Tool location. The hose and tools are easy to get at and to use. 3. Price. I have never tried one of the really expensive vacuums, but this one does everything I need it to do with great dependability for a very small price. 

When I tell you this Hoover Vacuum “sucks”, I mean it in the best possible way!
